Observed Brain Changes

The results reveal several changes in brain activity:

  • Marked increase in activity in the nucleus accumbens (reward circuit) and the anterior cingulate cortex
  • Decrease in activation of sensory processing areas (parietal and occipital lobes)
  • Direct correlation between craving intensity and nucleus accumbens activation

These changes are similar to those observed in other forms of addiction (nicotine, video games, psychoactive substances). Participants with excessive use reported more irritability and anxiety during deprivation.

Limitations and Perspectives

The study has several limitations: a small number of participants, data loss for 7 out of 25 subjects, and a short duration of restriction. The authors emphasize that functional MRI cannot irrefutably confirm the mechanisms at play in daily life. Further research of longer durations and other age groups would be necessary.
